Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were 8.2 million mt in August 2012, according to the USGS. This was about 3.0 percent higher compared with shipments for August 2011. Shipments for the year through August were 52.6 million mt, up about 12 percent for the same period in 2011.
Clinker production totaled 5.9 million mt in August 2012, about 2.0 percent more than the output in August 2011. Production for the year through August was 43.9 million mt, up about 10 percent. Masonry cement shipments of about 188,000 mt for August were up nearly 3.0 percent compared with shipments in August 2011. Shipments for the year through August were 1.3 million mt, up about 5.0 percent.
August 2012 imports of cement and clinker of about 632,000 mt were 15 percent less than August 2011. Imports for the year through August were 4.56 million mt, up almost 8.0 percent.
